Michigan Mother Charged with Manslaughter After Tragic Home Altercation Leads to Daughter’s Death

FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, MI – A western Michigan woman has been charged with manslaughter following the death of her 11-year-old adopted daughter. The incident, which occurred during a reported physical altercation at their home, led to the arrest of 55-year-old Sherry Leak, police said.

The tragic event unfolded over the weekend at the Clover Estates Mobile Home Park, located about 190 miles northwest of Detroit. Emergency responders arrived at Leak’s residence on Saturday, only to find Mialah Leak, the young girl, unresponsive and not breathing. Despite efforts to revive her, Mialah was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

Investigators believe the confrontation began when Leak tried to restrain her daughter. During the encounter, Leak allegedly sat on the young girl until she lost consciousness. This act, authorities say, was a direct contributor to her death.

Following the incident, police took Leak into custody, based on preliminary findings from the scene. An autopsy has been performed, though results are still pending. The findings will play a crucial role in further legal proceedings as the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office continues to examine the case in detail.

During Leak’s recent arraignment, prosecutors cited evidence, including her admission to police, which corroborated the medical reports under review. The court heard how the physical evidence aligned with the narrative that an altercation led to the tragic death.

Further complicating the family’s tragic narrative, Child Protective Services has stepped in to file a petition that seeks to strip Leak of her parental rights for Mialah’s twin sister, who is currently hospitalized under undisclosed conditions.

Leak, who remains detained at the Muskegon County Jail with a bond set at $100,000, is represented by a court-appointed attorney. She is expected back in court on December 9 for a probable cause conference.

Residents of the mobile home park recalled that Leak had adopted Mialah and her sister when they were younger. They described an occasionally strained relationship between Leak and Mialah, characterized by frequent loud arguments and disturbances.

As the community grapples with the shock of the young girl’s death, authorities continue their rigorous investigation. More details are expected to emerge, including the results of the autopsy and further developments in the ongoing legal proceedings.

The case has drawn attention to issues of child safety and parental responsibility, sparking discussions on how such tragic outcomes might be prevented in the future. Local child advocacy groups are calling for increased awareness and stricter monitoring to protect vulnerable children, emphasizing that the community and authorities must work hand in hand to ensure a safe environment for every child.
