Suburban Tragedy: Illinois Man Allegedly Murders Father, Calls Mother to Witness the Aftermath

SCHAUMBURG, IL – A tragic incident unfolded in Schaumburg, a suburban area of Chicago, where a 28-year-old man is accused of murdering his father and then beckoning his mother to witness the grim aftermath. The attack occurred on a Saturday morning, which began like any other until it took a deadly turn.

Authorities reported that Abhijit Patel allegedly called his mother while she was at work, suggesting she come home to check on her husband, Anupam Patel, 67, who had not updated her on his health condition despite it being routine due to his diabetes. Concerned by the unusual silence and high glucose readings shown on a health monitoring app, the mother left for home.

Upon her arrival around 10:30 a.m., she found the garage door uncharacteristically unlocked, escalating her worry. Inside, she was confronted by her son who chillingly confessed to dealing with his father and directed her towards the bedroom.

There, the scene was devastating. Anupam Patel was discovered deceased, lying in a blood-soaked bed with a sledgehammer, suspected to be the murder weapon, beside him. In shock, the mother immediately dialed 911.

When first responders arrived, they detained Abhijit Patel without any resistance. He freely surrendered, raising his hands in the air as officers approached. Paramedics officially pronounced Anupam Patel dead at a local hospital, where an autopsy later confirmed the fatal injuries included multiple head wounds and a severe skull fracture.

During the police interrogation, Abhijit asserted that his actions were compelled by what he described as a “religious duty” and alleged long-term abuse by his father during his childhood. However, these accusations were dismissed as “delusional” by medical professionals, citing the younger Patel’s history of mental illness, including schizophrenia, for which he had previously been hospitalized.

Further complicating the case, it was revealed that there was an effective order of protection against Abhijit Patel that prohibited him from being in his father’s presence. This order was a response to earlier threats he had made and was intended to remain in effect until 2027.

In addition to the family turmoil, Abhijit Patel had been banned from the University of Illinois Chicago campus in November after making disturbing comments in student forums and on social media. University authorities had insisted on a psychiatric evaluation before he could reengage with the campus community.

Now, Patel faces charges of first-degree murder. During a court session held on Monday, the presiding judge denied him bond and issued a directive that he should have no contact with his mother. He is scheduled for another court appearance on December 19.

This harrowing event has left the community of Schaumburg in shock as they try to make sense of the violence that shattered the peace of a seemingly quiet suburban morning. More details will likely emerge as the investigation continues and the court proceedings provide additional insights into the motivations behind such a tragic outcome.
