Cordova, TN – A local man was pronounced dead following a car crash that investigators now believe was preceded by a domestic dispute, during which he was repeatedly stabbed. The incident occurred in Cordova, a northeastern suburb of Memphis, leading to the arrest of the man’s wife on a charge of second-degree murder.
Last week on Nov. 29, emergency services were called to the scene of a two-car collision at around 9:55 p.m. at the intersection of Houston Levee Road and Macon Road. Upon arrival, they discovered Derrick Curtis, 56, in a Chevrolet Colorado, which had veered off the road into a ditch. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, Curtis succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Regional One Health in Memphis.
During their assessment, Shelby County deputies noted inconsistencies pointing to a violent altercation prior to the accident. Further examination revealed Curtis had sustained multiple stab wounds. Blood traces on the driver’s side floorboard of the vehicle intensified suspicions that the injuries weren’t solely from the crash.
The subsequent investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office’s Violent Crimes Unit suggested a domestic dispute had escalated fatally before Curtis drove away from the scene. Sheila Ann Curtis, also 56, was identified as the primary suspect following evidence gathered by detectives.
According to first responders, Derrick Curtis disclosed to paramedics that he had been stabbed by his wife. This revelation came shortly before he passed away from three stab wounds to his left leg, which likely caused his loss of vehicular control.
Following her arrest, Sheila Curtis maintained her innocence during police interviews. She recounted that the couple had attended a funeral earlier that same day and argued during their drive home. She claimed that her husband had dropped her off before the crash occurred. However, law enforcement officials are skeptical of her account, especially after a relative reported picking Sheila and her mother up approximately two miles from the crash site shortly after the incident occurred.
Relations between Derrick and Sheila Curtis, who had a known history of domestic issues, took a tragic turn that evening as documented accounts and physical evidence suggest a significantly different story than the one Sheila presented.
She is currently being held at the Shelby County Jail with bail set at $500,000. A bond hearing is scheduled for Wednesday as investigators continue to piece together the exact sequence of events leading up to the fatal crash.
This troubling case underlines the severe consequences that can result from domestic disputes, reminding communities of the critical need for awareness and intervention strategies to prevent such violent outcomes. The ongoing investigation aims to unravel this complex narrative, ensuring justice is served while also providing insights into mechanisms to mitigate similar incidents in the future.
