One person was wounded as multiple Metro East agencies assisted; the site lacked a nightclub license, officials said.
CAHOKIA HEIGHTS, Ill. — Police are investigating a pre-dawn shooting tied to a Christmas night party at the VIP Club on the 4700 block of Bond Avenue, where one person was wounded and officers from several jurisdictions converged early Friday to secure the area and gather evidence.
The Cahokia Heights Police Department said officers responded around 1:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26, after reports of shots at the venue. Detectives requested assistance from neighboring agencies and Illinois State Police Forensic Services to document the scene and recover shell casings. The city later said the address was not licensed to operate as a nightclub, focusing attention on who organized the party, whether security was in place and how the event was managed as crowds arrived after the holiday.
By sunrise, investigators had taped off portions of the parking lot and building entrance while technicians photographed evidence and searched nearby gutters and fences. Police said one person was transported for treatment; their name and condition were not released. Officers did not announce any arrests and provided no suspect description. Witnesses told reporters they heard a burst of gunfire as music cut off and people scrambled toward cars, some crouching behind bumpers while others ran across Bond Avenue.
Officials said the club’s licensing status remains under review alongside the criminal investigation. In similar Metro East cases, city inspectors often examine whether occupancy limits, permits and security plans were in place, while detectives reconstruct timelines using video from inside the venue and nearby businesses. The VIP Club sits along a corridor with small storefronts, auto shops and residences, where prior calls for service have included disturbances and traffic stops. Police did not say how many shots were fired, what caliber weapon was used or whether the gunfire began indoors.
Detectives interviewed attendees and asked area shop owners to share footage covering the hours before and after 1:30 a.m. Technicians collected items for lab testing to determine firing positions and direction of travel. Investigators also reached out to the property owner and event promoters to clarify who controlled the space during the party and what safety measures were promised to guests. The department said updates would be released when verified, including any changes to the victim’s condition and information about potential suspects.
Residents along Bond Avenue described a heavy, multi-agency presence through the morning, with patrol vehicles from Cahokia Heights, Fairmont City and Sauget positioned at intersections as crime scene lights illuminated the lot. “It was loud and confusing, then quiet except for the radios,” said Angela Reed, who lives near the club. A shopkeeper returning to open his business said he found the street blocked as officers extended the perimeter to preserve tire tracks and footprints.
As of Saturday, the investigation remains open. Police are awaiting forensic results, additional video and follow-up interviews before announcing arrests or charges. Officials said the next update is expected after the weekend when evidence reviews are complete.
