The 53-year-old retired nurse was struck and killed shortly after guiding an older man across a busy road.
ROCKPORT, Texas — The husband of a Rockport woman killed Monday night said her final act was typical of her: she saw someone who needed help and stepped in, minutes before an SUV struck her at Business 35 and West Corpus Christi Street.
The victim was identified by police as Debbra Gail Daniel, 53. Her husband, Donald Mease, used her married name, Debbra Mease. Police said she died at the scene. The driver, an 81-year-old woman, stayed and cooperated with officers. No charges have been announced. The case remains under investigation, and a reconstruction will determine how fast the vehicle was moving, how the lanes were occupied and what conditions looked like at the moment of impact.
Mease said the couple had spent the day making tamales for their business, then she walked toward a convenience store for snacks. He called her a retired nurse who carried that instinct into everyday life. “She gave me inspiration,” he said. “Every day was just joyful with her.” He said she often sat with people who seemed troubled, prayed with them and offered comfort. The couple settled in Rockport years ago and built a routine around work, movie nights and beach walks.
Police said the collision happened at about 6:30 p.m. after the victim escorted an elderly man across Business 35 and started back. The man was not hurt. Authorities have not released toxicology findings, lighting assessments or a final diagram of the crash. The department said any criminal review will be made after the report is complete and forwarded to prosecutors. Officials also said driver age alone does not determine fault and that each case turns on evidence from the scene.
Neighbors and business owners near the crossing said early evening can be challenging as traffic builds and the sky darkens. Residents have urged improvements ranging from brighter crosswalk markings to pedestrian-activated flashers. Mease said he hopes the city considers changes that make it easier to see people on foot. He added that customers have told him to take time away from the kitchen while the family plans services.
Police said they will update the public once reconstruction and witness interviews are finished. A memorial has begun to grow at the corner. The next formal update is expected after investigators deliver their findings for review.
