CHULA VISTA, Calif. – In a tragic episode that has gripped the local community, a 49-year-old man, Jose Carlos Villanueva, stands accused of a horrific crime involving his ex-girlfriend inside a convenience store in Chula Vista. The grim proceedings began to unfold this week in a San Diego courtroom where Villanueva faced a series of charges including murder and arson, related to an attack last year that ultimately claimed the life of 44-year-old Amanda Buchanan.
On the morning of August 24, 2023, emergency responders rushed to a fire at a 7-Eleven store on Broadway in Chula Vista, where they encountered a distressing scene. Smoke billowed from the store as they found a severely burned employee outside, later identified as Buchanan. Despite rescuers hearing her cries for help and her subsequent hospitalization, Buchanan succumbed to her injuries days later. A fellow employee suffered serious burns while trying to quench the flames and survived.
The court heard that chilling surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the attack. Buchanan’s son, Dominic Rivera, offered a heart-wrenching testimony; he described how his mother was caught off-guard and attacked from behind as she was walking towards the restroom. Villanueva, her ex-boyfriend, had entered the store with a gasoline can, dousing Buchanan and igniting the fire amid a physical confrontation.
Eyewitness accounts added that a brave co-worker tried to intervene, receiving burns in the process. The quick action of the store owner in deploying a fire extinguisher controlled the fire within seconds, a critical move that prevented further disaster.
