Christmas Eve tragedy: four people discovered dead in Terrell home

A child from Wills Point was among those killed; investigators continue to examine motive and relationships.

TERRELL, Texas — A week after four people were found dead inside a Rash Lane home on Christmas Eve, authorities have identified the victims and the suspected shooter and said the case is a triple murder-suicide. Officers discovered the bodies after a 5:30 p.m. welfare check on Dec. 24.

Police said the victims were Philip Dale Humphrey, 66, of Kaufman; Sherry Lynn Bostick, 62, of Terrell; and a 12-year-old boy from Wills Point whose name is being withheld at his family’s request. The suspected gunman was identified as Casey Dale Humphrey, 38, of Forney, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators have not described how the people in the home were connected or why the shooting occurred. Detectives are reviewing evidence, interviewing relatives and neighbors, and building a timeline of the hours before the welfare call.

The Dec. 24 response followed calls from relatives who could not reach family members, according to police. Officers arrived at the 200 block of Rash Lane, a residential street about 30 miles east of Dallas, and found four people inside with gunshot wounds. All were pronounced dead at the scene. Police later confirmed that three deaths were homicides and the fourth was a suicide. A department spokesperson said there is no ongoing threat to the public. “We know families are grieving during the holidays, and we want to get this right,” the spokesperson said, noting that additional details will be released as they can be verified.

On Dec. 29, police provided the names and ages of those killed and of the suspected shooter. Officials did not specify the caliber of weapon, the number of rounds fired or where each person was located in the home when officers entered. Autopsies were ordered through the county medical examiner to determine precise causes and times of death. Investigators have not announced prior calls for service to the address or any protective orders tied to the household. Neighbors said patrol cars remained on the block for hours while crime-scene technicians documented the interior and collected ballistic evidence and electronic devices for analysis.

Terrell’s case unfolded during a holiday week when several North Texas communities also reported domestic-related shootings, drawing attention to how such incidents ripple across small neighborhoods. Residents on Rash Lane described the street as quiet, with one- and two-story houses and limited traffic. Several homes had holiday lights still up as police tape cordoned off the driveway and yard. The city said peer support and counseling were made available to first responders who worked the scene. Local officials emphasized that conclusions could change as lab results come back and interviews are completed.

With the suspected shooter dead, no criminal charges will be filed. Detectives are waiting on autopsy and ballistics findings and are checking for surveillance footage, phone records and possible prior reports involving those named by police. Officials said they expect to release another update after preliminary autopsy results are returned and after additional interviews with relatives are conducted. Funeral plans for the adult victims were not immediately available Monday, and the child’s name remains withheld at his family’s request.

As of Monday evening, police said the investigation remains active but contained to the single residence on Rash Lane. A further update is expected after labs deliver preliminary results later this week.
