The 43-year-old was discovered before sunrise; no arrests were announced Thursday.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A man was found dead with a gunshot wound on the porch of his apartment early Thursday, Jan. 1, along the 12600 block of Woodforest Boulevard in east Harris County, prompting a homicide investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities said the man’s live-in girlfriend found him outside their front door shortly before 6 a.m. and called 911. Deputies arrived just after 6:30 a.m. and secured the complex’s entrance lanes and nearby walkways while medics confirmed the man had died at the scene. Investigators withheld his name pending family notification. The case drew multiple units to the complex on New Year’s morning and became one of the year’s first homicide probes in unincorporated east Harris County, where the sheriff’s office is primary law enforcement.
Sgt. Greg Pinkins said preliminary information shows the man left the apartment around 1:30 a.m. and returned sometime before he was discovered. The girlfriend reported hearing no disturbance overnight, according to deputies. Detectives documented evidence around the porch and canvassed neighboring buildings for cameras that may show the man’s movements or a vehicle arriving in the early hours. Investigators did not immediately identify a suspect, motive, or whether a weapon was recovered. The county medical examiner is expected to perform an autopsy to determine the precise cause and manner of death and to help narrow the timeline.
The complex, a cluster of garden-style buildings off Woodforest near Normandy Street, serves hundreds of residents who commute along the boulevard to nearby schools, retail, and the Ship Channel industrial corridor. On Thursday morning, crime scene tape closed sidewalks while residents headed to work. Some said they woke to flashing lights; others said the overnight seemed quiet until patrol cars arrived. The sheriff’s office said detectives would request any porch-camera or dashcam video captured between 1:30 a.m. and dawn to assist in mapping the man’s route and identifying anyone who approached the unit.
Procedurally, detectives will interview the girlfriend and other potential witnesses, collect video from complex cameras and nearby businesses, and process physical evidence at the county crime lab. If investigators identify a person of interest, they could seek a warrant after presenting findings to a judge. No court filings were listed Thursday morning, and officials said updates would follow once the medical examiner releases preliminary results and detectives verify key times. The agency did not announce plans for a formal briefing but said information would be released as it becomes available.
By late morning, a handful of neighbors stopped near the tape to ask deputies about the investigation. “We’re looking for any video from overnight,” a deputy told one passerby. Another resident described seeing units arrive one after another. “It was quiet until the lights,” he said. The scene gradually cleared as detectives finished measurements and loaded evidence bags into an SUV, but a few markers remained on the walkway as residents stepped around them.
As of Thursday afternoon, the victim’s name had not been released and no suspect description was provided. Detectives said the next update is expected after initial autopsy findings in the coming days.
