PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — A tragic confrontation between a father and son culminated in murder charges for a 25-year-old Port Charlotte man this week. Authorities reported that Melquan Stewart fatally shot his father, 57-year-old Glenn Stewart, during a heated dispute regarding employment and financial obligations.
The incident occurred outside the younger Stewart’s home on Monday. Law enforcement officers responded to the scene after neighbors called 911 upon hearing gunshots. They discovered Glenn Stewart in the driveway with severe gunshot wounds.
Emergency services rushed Glenn to a local hospital where he was later declared deceased. The sheriff’s office statement detailed that the dispute began over Glenn’s insistence that his son find a job and contribute to household expenses. Melquan had allegedly been financially dependent on his father for several months.
According to the official account, Glenn Stewart arrived at his son’s home to discuss his employment status and to check on Melquan’s efforts to secure military papers. During the altercation, as Glenn sat in his vehicle, Melquan reportedly heard voices that prompted him to shoot his father multiple times through the passenger window of the SUV.
Investigators disclosed that after the initial shooting, Melquan Stewart approached the vehicle, dragged his father to the driveway, and shot him again. In a puzzling and emotional act, Melquan then positioned his father’s arms across his chest, expressing his love before fleeing briefly in the vehicle.
Melquan turned the SUV around not long after leaving, returning to the scene where he was subsequently arrested. He was found with blood-stained clothes and surrendered to the authorities, mentioning the voices he claimed compelled him to commit the act.
Deputies recovered a black semiautomatic handgun from the scene along with securing evidence of blood stains in and around the vehicle.
Following his arrest, Melquan Stewart faced a judge and is being held without bond. A follow-up court appearance has been scheduled for later in the week as the investigation continues.
This case has stirred local community members and ignited conversations about mental health and gun violence. Experts emphasize the importance of addressing mental health issues as part of community safety strategies.
