Deputies say a 23-year-old man was shot once and is in fair condition as investigators weigh possible self-defense.
HOUSTON, Texas — A mother opened fire Monday night at a north Harris County apartment complex hours after a fight among teenagers, striking a 23-year-old man once, investigators said. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded about 8:30 p.m. to the complex near Kuykendahl Road and FM 1960.
Deputies said the confrontation followed an earlier fistfight around 6:30 p.m. that was broken up by one parent. Later, another mother returned to sort out what happened. During that second encounter, a man in his early 20s arrived and a disturbance ensued, according to the sheriff’s office. The woman, fearing for her son’s safety, fired several rounds and hit the man once. As of Tuesday night, investigators said they were still gathering statements and reviewing evidence to determine whether the shooting meets Texas’ self-defense standard. Several people were detained for questioning, and no charges had been filed.
Deputies said the first call came from the complex off the 15400 block of Kuykendahl Road about two hours after the teens’ altercation ended. Sgt. Freder Munoz said in an on-scene briefing that an adult male “causing a disturbance” showed up as the mother and others discussed the earlier fight. “The juvenile’s mother, who was present, fearing for her son’s safety, withdrew a firearm and shot several times,” Munoz said. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez later said the wounded man is 23 and was transported in fair condition. Investigators initially heard he might have been under the influence of drugs; the agency said that was not confirmed as of late Tuesday.
Officials said they have not determined whether the mother or other families knew the 23-year-old before Monday’s events. Detectives were also working to clarify the man’s role, if any, in the original fight among teenagers. The apartment’s walkways and parking lot were taped off for several hours as deputies marked shell casings and canvassed for cameras. Investigators seized video and took statements from multiple teens and adults. The sheriff’s office said several individuals were detained at the scene while detectives sorted out the timeline.
The complex sits along a busy stretch near Cypress Landing Drive, an area with frequent evening foot traffic and multiple multi-story buildings facing shared courtyards. Residents described a typical after-school crowd at dusk on Monday as families returned home. While no residents were publicly identified by deputies, several parents with teens were among those interviewed. The sheriff’s office did not report any other injuries tied to the gunfire and did not identify the weapon used.
As of Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said the case remained under review with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Detectives will evaluate whether the woman’s account, witness statements, and any video support a self-defense claim under state law. If charges are pursued, they would be filed at a later date after prosecutors review the investigative file. Investigators plan additional interviews this week and are awaiting any forensic results from the scene documentation.
Neighbors said the area was quiet again by early Tuesday, with crime-scene tape removed and patrol units cleared from the lot. Patrol deputies were expected to make extra checks while detectives continued follow-up. The sheriff’s office did not release names of those involved, citing the ongoing investigation and the presence of juveniles.
As of Tuesday night, the 23-year-old remained in fair condition at a Houston hospital, and investigators were scheduling further interviews. The next public update is expected after detectives complete their case packet for prosecutors.
