OCALA, Fla. – A Florida man received a life sentence for his role in a heinous murder executed under the guise of a romantic encounter, a ploy that led to the victim’s violent death and stunned a local community, officials said.
In Marion County Court, 48-year-old Michael Montgomery Jr. was found guilty of first-degree murder amongst other charges, stemming from the fatal shooting of 40-year-old Wayne Barlow in June 2023. The conviction, announced on Thursday, concluded a disturbing tale of deception and violence.
Authorities detailed how Montgomery, along with his accomplice, 39-year-old Jessica Lynn Long, crafted a deadly trap. They lured Barlow to a secluded location with the promise of a sexual encounter. There, he was ambushed, brutally assaulted, and ultimately shot in the head.
The grim discovery of Barlow’s body was initially mistaken for animal remains by a passerby on a rural road. Upon closer inspection, law enforcement noted severe injuries and signs of a fierce struggle, including a gunshot wound.
Investigations revealed that Long had enticed Barlow out under the pretense of meeting for intimacy. His roommate corroborated suspicions, noting Barlow’s unease about Long allegedly taking his car the night before he was killed.
The situation quickly escalated when deputies traced Barlow’s stolen car, leading to a high-speed chase on U.S. Highway 441. Both Montgomery and Long were apprehended in dramatic fashion — Montgomery found submerged in water and Long discovered hiding in a tree.
During initial interrogations, Long distanced herself from the killing but eventually detailed the plot, identifying Montgomery as the triggerman. Confronted with her testimony, Montgomery confessed to the crime, describing a robbery attempt that spiraled into murder.
According to authorities, the conspiracy involved Montgomery and an unidentified man subduing Barlow with a bicycle lock and then forcing him into the trunk of a car.
