Salt Lake City, Utah — A solemn memorial service at a local church turned tragic when gunfire broke out in the parking lot, leaving two people dead and six injured. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening outside the Rose Park 5th Ward meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, during a gathering to honor a deceased member of the community.
The violence ensued at the church located at 660 N. Redwood Road, about four miles west of the historic Temple Square, disrupting a service attended by roughly 200 people. Authorities identified the deceased as 38-year-old Sione Vatuvei and 46-year-old Vaea Tulikihihifo, while three of the wounded remained in critical condition as of Thursday.
Police arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m. to find that the suspects had fled. Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd emphasized that the shooting was not an attack on religious beliefs or a random occurrence, but appeared to involve gang-related disputes.
In response to the violence, the church’s spokesman, Sam Penrod, expressed sorrow and concern, affirming the congregation’s cooperation with the police investigation and extending prayers to those impacted. “Our hearts are deeply saddened by this act of violence in what should be a sacred and safe space,” Penrod stated.
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall voiced her dismay and assured the public that efforts were underway to bring the perpetrators to justice. “Such acts of violence at a place of worship are horrifying and completely unacceptable. We are committed to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable,” Mendenhall said.
The shooting has particularly resonated within the city’s Pacific Islander community, which frequents the Rose Park 5th Ward meetinghouse. Both congregations using the facility, including the Riverside 2nd Ward, predominantly consist of members of Tongan descent.
