OCALA, FL — In a harrowing case of domestic violence, a Florida man faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and arson after allegedly setting his wife and their home on fire. Law enforcement officials in Marion County reported that the incident occurred after the man’s wife asked for a divorce.
On the morning of Nov. 30, deputies were called to a residence in Ocala where they discovered 51-year-old Alfonza Green suffering from burns. His wife was found drenched in gasoline but had not been set aflame. According to authorities, the confrontation began when Green emerged from a shower and abruptly poured gasoline over his wife as she was using her phone in their bedroom.
Officials stated that Green threatened his wife with a murder-suicide, indicating that if he were to die, they would both die together. When she tried to escape, Green reportedly blocked the exits and attempted to ignite the gasoline soaked room with a lighter, saying they would “burn together.”
Despite the volatile situation, the woman’s quick actions to evade further escalation prevented immediate ignition, although Green eventually set himself on fire. At the scene, investigators noted the presence of six other individuals, including an 11-year-old boy, who were unharmed in the ensuing chaos.
After his arrest, Green told investigators he had an altercation with his wife regarding her desire to dissolve their marriage. He confessed to pouring gasoline on their bed out of despair but denied any intent to harm his wife directly. He claimed she had exited the room before he attempted to start the fire, which inadvertently resulted in his own injuries.
The authorities, however, challenge Green’s rendition of the events, citing the victim’s testimony and physical evidence collected at their home. This evidence points not only to the premeditated nature of the attack but also underscores the severity of the threat posed to everyone in the household.
Currently, Green is detained at the Marion County Jail without bond, awaiting further legal proceedings. The fire caused considerable damage to the residence, but fortunately, did not result in any additional physical injuries to other members of the household.
The investigation into this alarming incident continues as local authorities piece together the sequence of events that led to this violent act. This case underlines the extreme reactions that can arise from familial and marital disputes, highlighting a critical need for timely interventions in domestic conflict situations.
