GREENFIELD, IN – Local authorities were quick to respond after a toddler, clad only in a diaper, was found wandering alone and crying outside in severely cold weather, triggering an immediate rescue and subsequent criminal investigation. The incident occurred at Prairie Meadows Apartment Homes in Greenfield, a suburban area of Indianapolis, when temperatures were perilously hovering around 13 degrees Fahrenheit.
A neighborhood resident, alarmed by the sounds of a child’s cries, ventured outside to discover the two-year-old isolated in the snow. Police, alerted by the concerned citizen, arrived promptly to the scene. The first responders enveloped the shivering toddler in a coat and quickly moved him into the warmth of their patrol vehicle while they awaited medical personnel.
After securing the child, officers followed tiny footprints in the snow that led them to an open apartment approximately 750 feet away from where the toddler was found. Upon entering the open residence after getting no response, they discovered 20-year-old Logan Nickolas asleep on a couch. Despite several attempts, it took a while before he responded, subsequently identifying himself as the father of the child.
Inside the disheveled apartment, police noted several concerning signs, including the smell of burnt marijuana and visible drug paraphernalia. An unsecured handgun and a makeshift straw on a plate further raised alarms about the environment in which the child was living. Nickolas initially denied using drugs, attributing his incapacitation to exhaustion from late work hours.
However, interviews with the child’s mother painted a different picture. She claimed that Nickolas had been using substances including marijuana and cocaine, and expressed her own challenges in contacting him on the day of the incident. At the time, the mother was at work and had only reluctantly given Nickolas permission to stay at her apartment intermittently over the past week.
The emergency crews swiftly transported the toddler to the hospital where he was treated for severe hypothermia and frostbite. Doctors reported that the child was stable but would require ongoing monitoring and care to fully recover from the exposure to extreme cold.
Following the investigation, Nickolas was charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury and putting a dependent in a dangerous situation. Both charges underscore the severe lack of care and hazardous environment provided by the father.
