AIKEN, SC — In a harrowing case of domestic violence that gripped the community, a South Carolina man has been sentenced to 75 years in prison for the murder and kidnapping of his former girlfriend, Jamilla Smith, an attack that was disastrously captured during her frantic 911 calls for help.
Daniel Harmon, 36, pleaded guilty to both charges in Aiken County this past Friday, where the court ordered a consecutive serving of 45 years for murder and 30 years for kidnapping. This string of sentences effectively amounts to a lifetime behind bars for Harmon, following a brutal assault that culminated in Smith’s death.
The tragedy unfolded on December 2, 2023, after Smith, a 30-year-old mother of two, dialed 911 early in the morning to report a domestic dispute with Harmon along Interstate 20. In a second call that same night, she desperately informed the operator that Harmon had broken into her home and was in pursuit as she tried to escape. The chilling 911 recording picked up the sounds of a car engine accelerating followed by Smith’s screams; the call abruptly ended with her last words conveying that she had been struck by a vehicle.
Despite immediate efforts to locate her, Smith disappeared, prompting a frantic search. Harmon was arrested three days later when authorities tracked down a rented Dodge Charger linked to him, which disturbingly contained traces of Smith’s blood in the trunk. It wasn’t until several agonizing months later, in May 2024, that investigators discovered Smith’s body in a secluded wooded area along Silver Bluff Road, based on further leads. An autopsy later confirmed she died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head.
