Brooklyn, NY – Kianna Underwood, a former Nickelodeon star, tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run incident in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood early last Friday morning. The 33-year-old was reportedly struck by multiple vehicles while attempting to cross a street, and police are still searching for the drivers responsible for the crash.
The accident occurred at around 6:43 a.m. at the corner of Pitkin Avenue and Mother Gaston Boulevard following a 911 emergency call, according to officials. Arriving officers found Underwood, who was critically injured after being hit by a black 2021 Ford Explorer SUV, which was seen on surveillance video passing another vehicle by crossing into an opposing lane of traffic. Moments after the initial hit, a second vehicle, a black and gray sedan, struck Underwood while she lay in the road.
Underwood was pronounced dead at the scene, and both drivers involved fled before police arrived. No arrests have been made to date, even as the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad continues their hunt for answers, working out of the local 73rd Precinct.
Footage from a nearby security camera shows the severe impact and indicates that Underwood was dragged almost two blocks from the collision site before her body was discovered at the intersection of Pitkin Avenue and Osborn Street. Investigators are meticulously examining this evidence, seeking any leads to resolve the case swiftly.
The NYPD revealed that Underwood was experiencing homelessness at the time of her death, providing a stark contrast to her days as a celebrated young actress. Underwood first came to prominence voicing the character of Fuschia Glover on Nickelodeon’s “Little Bill” from 1999 to 2004. She later appeared in the network’s hit sketch comedy show “All That” in 2005, sharing the stage with future stars like Kenan Thompson and Amanda Bynes.
Her career also extended to the stage, where she performed as Little Inez in the national tour of “Hairspray,” and to the big screen in “The 24 Hour Woman.” Despite early success, Underwood’s career dimmed, and her life took a more challenging path in recent years, culminating in her tragic death.
Angelique Bates, a contemporary of Underwood and a fellow “All That” cast member, had previously raised concerns about Underwood’s well-being. Bates’s pleas for help on social media in 2023 amplified awareness of Underwood’s struggles but lamentably foreshadowed the recent tragedy.
Bates hoped that Underwood would be remembered for her vibrant personality and professional talents rather than her untimely demise. “I think she would have loved to know that the love from her supporters was reciprocated,” Bates commented.
The incident underscores the broader issues of pedestrian safety and hit-and-run accidents, which pose significant challenges across New York City. Particularly in bustling areas like Brownsville, which is known for its heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic, ensuring crosswalk safety is of paramount importance.
In cases like these, authorities emphasize the importance of community cooperation in tracking down offenders. New York law takes a severe stance against hit-and-run drivers, who can face serious felony charges, highlighting the critical need for these individuals to be held accountable.
As the community mourns the loss of Kianna Underwood, her story serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles some entertainers face after their early fame fades. Her untimely death not only leaves a void in the hearts of friends, family, and fans but also starkly highlights the ongoing issues of pedestrian safety and the plight of former child stars. The NYPD urges anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward to help bring justice to Underwood’s tragic death.
