PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — A serene evening at a bustling shopping plaza turned tragic when a 65-year-old woman was fatally stabbed at a local bookstore, authorities reported. The incident occurred on Monday night, leaving a community in shock and a suspect behind bars.
The violent encounter took place shortly before 8 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble on Legacy Avenue in Palm Beach Gardens, an area known for its vibrant shopping scene. Responding to an emergency call, police officers arrived at the scene to find Rita Loncharich critically injured with a knife in her back. Despite rapid transport to a nearby hospital, Loncharich succumbed to her injuries during surgery.
Rapid action by law enforcement led to the identification and arrest of 40-year-old Antonio Moore, found approximately a quarter mile from the crime scene. According to police, Moore had been in the city for a week, having traveled from Georgia. He encountered Loncharich while charging his phone at the bookstore, where he inexplicably attacked her without prior interaction.
During the interrogation, Moore explained to detectives that he experienced an overwhelming “internal buildup” leading to a drastic “fight or flight” response. He confessed to having impulsively grabbed a fixed-blade knife from his jacket and stabbing Loncharich, who was merely the nearest person to him at that moment.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported hearing Loncharich’s cries after being stabbed, describing her as appearing shocked. After the attack, Moore fled to the wooded area behind the plaza but was quickly located by police, aided by witness descriptions and security footage.
Now in custody, Moore is facing a first-degree murder charge and is held without bond at the Palm Beach County Jail. His initial court appearance is scheduled for January 22.
The stabbing has since left the community and local businesses deeply unsettled. The management of Legacy Place shopping plaza issued a statement extending their deepest sympathies to Loncharich’s family and friends, labeling the incident as a profound community loss.
In an effort to prevent future incidents and reassure the public, officials at the shopping plaza have announced plans to enhance security measures and are collaborating with local authorities to refine safety protocols for businesses in the area.
As the investigation continues, police assert that there was no known prior connection between Moore and Loncharich, indicating the attack was unprovoked and random. They are urging anyone with further information to come forward, as detectives piece together the circumstances of this unforeseen tragedy.
