One dead, two injured in Detroit east side shooting; arrest made

One man died; a second man and a woman were injured on the east side.

DETROIT — Detroit police launched a homicide investigation Wednesday night after a shooting on the city’s east side left one man dead and two people injured. Officers responded around 8 p.m. to the 20400 block of Marx Street near Winchester Avenue and placed a suspect in custody.

The case, which police described as involving people who knew one another, moved quickly from a 911 call to an active crime scene. The second man was hospitalized with injuries described as not life-threatening. The woman was treated at the scene and listed in stable condition. Detectives with the homicide unit collected physical evidence and interviewed witnesses late into the night. Authorities did not immediately release names, ages, or any information on the suspected motive, citing the early stage of the investigation and pending family notification.

When officers arrived, they found a man who was pronounced dead at the scene. “All parties involved knew each other,” Detroit police said as they confirmed a suspect was taken into custody. Investigators taped off the block while evidence technicians documented the interior of a residence and the front yard. The hospitalized man was transported by medics, while the woman received on-site treatment from first responders. Police did not specify the nature of her injuries or whether the suspect was among those hurt.

Detectives spent the evening canvassing door-to-door for surveillance video that might show arrivals and departures on Marx Street before 8 p.m. They also searched for shell casings and any firearm linked to the shooting, though they did not immediately describe what, if anything, was recovered. Investigators said they would use ballistic and forensic testing, including comparisons through state databases, to determine whether a weapon in this case matches other incidents. The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to establish the cause and manner of death and to confirm the victim’s identity.

The neighborhood, a residential corridor near 8 Mile and I-75, has a mix of single-family homes and small driveways lining narrow streets. After dark on Wednesday, police lights illuminated the block as family members and neighbors watched from porches. Residents answered questions from officers and then stepped back behind the tape while technicians placed numbered markers on the walkway and lawn. The scene remained active for hours as detectives moved evidence bags to waiting vehicles and patrol units redirected traffic around the closure.

Next steps include completing witness interviews, compiling reports and lab requests, and forwarding a warrant packet to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for charging review. If charges are authorized, the suspect would be scheduled for arraignment in 36th District Court. Police did not give a timetable for the warrant submission or say when additional details on relationships among those involved would be released. Officials said more information is expected once the medical examiner finishes preliminary findings and detectives confirm the event timeline.

By early Thursday, the immediate scene had been cleared, with officers indicating the investigation would continue with follow-up interviews and review of any neighborhood camera footage. Police have not released the identities of the dead man, the hospitalized man, or the woman, and have not publicly described a motive.
