Minnesota Man Charged in Christmas Eve Shooting Death of Mother to His Children, Attempted Suicide Leaves Community Reeling

HASTINGS, MN – A tragic event unfolded on Christmas Eve in Hastings, Minnesota, when a man allegedly killed the mother of his children and then attempted suicide. This incident has left the local community in shock, particularly as it occurred in the presence of the couple’s young children.

The accused, 29-year-old Demarco Jones, is facing charges of second-degree intentional murder following the death of 26-year-old Tatianna Ehnes-Giles. Authorities stated that Jones, who attempted to end his own life after the fatal shooting, is currently hospitalized with self-inflicted injuries.

According to officials, the situation was discovered after a 911 call made by Ehnes-Giles’ mother at approximately 2:23 p.m. She reported hearing a gunshot in the residence she shared with the couple and their children. Upon investigating, she found her daughter with a deadly head wound. In a distressing revelation, she told authorities that immediately after hearing the gunshot, her grandchildren came running to her, indicating their father had fallen.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Jones injured on the bedroom floor. He directed law enforcement to the firearm and, during initial interactions, alternated between claiming Ehnes-Giles had shot him and admitting to shooting her himself. The weapon and two spent shell casings were subsequently recovered by investigators.

The authorities described a heart-wrenching scene where Ehnes-Giles was found unresponsive “covered in blood,” with her hands positioned as if to shield her face, suggesting a defensive posture at the time of the shooting.

In conversations with law enforcement, family members provided additional details. Ehnes-Giles’ brother mentioned that Jones, before the police arrival, confessed to the shooting amidst accusations of infidelity. He informed investigators that during the heat of the argument, Jones turned the gun on himself.

Jones was charged while still in the hospital. Once medically fit, he will be transferred to Dakota County Jail, where he will be held with bail set at $2 million. His first court appearance is scheduled for January 5, with further details about his legal representation still pending.

The children, who were believed to be in proximity to the incident, were fortunately unharmed and are currently being cared for by family members.

This incident adds to an alarming trend of domestic incidents that often escalate to violence around the holiday season, a time when pressures and familial tensions can tragically boil over. Community leaders and advocates for domestic violence victims express profound concern over such episodes, emphasizing the need for more robust protective and preventive measures.

The ongoing investigation seeks to clarify the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy in an effort to understand the motives and circumstances that led to this violent act, not only to bring justice but also to prevent future incidents. This case has deeply affected the Hastings community, stirring discussions on the impact of domestic violence and the critical need for intervention and support systems for vulnerable families.
