Frisco sledding ride turns deadly amid weekend winter storm

Police are reconstructing the crash that killed a 16-year-old and left another teen in critical condition on a residential block.

FRISCO, Texas — A teen girl died and another remains in critical condition after a sled being towed by a Jeep hit a curb and slammed into a tree Sunday afternoon in a northwest Frisco subdivision, authorities said. The crash was reported about 2:30 p.m. near Majestic Gardens Drive and Killian Court as snow and ice covered side streets.

The case has become one of the most serious incidents tied to the weekend cold blast that stretched emergency crews across North Texas. Frisco police said a 16-year-old boy driving a Jeep Wrangler was pulling two 16-year-old girls on a sled when it veered into a curb and the sled collided with a tree. Officers arrived to find both girls with life-threatening injuries and began CPR and other aid before ambulances rushed them to hospitals. One died later; officials withheld her name because she was a minor. The second teen was in critical condition Monday morning as detectives continued interviews and scene analysis.

Investigators are working with the Denton County District Attorney’s Office to gather witness statements, review potential video and inspect the Jeep and sled. They have not released information on speed, restraint use or the sled’s construction. A resident who lives on the block said they saw police cars and crime scene tape go up quickly. Another neighbor, Melissa Treviño, said the response was swift and somber: “We didn’t know details at first, only that kids were hurt,” Treviño said. Police said the timeline remains preliminary while they complete a full crash reconstruction.

Family members and a youth soccer coach identified the teen who died as 16-year-old Elizabeth Angle, a Wakeland High School student, while authorities have not publicly named the surviving girl. Frisco ISD officials were preparing student support on Monday. The identities of the driver and other witnesses were not released. Officers asked anyone who was in the area or has doorbell footage to contact detectives, noting that video can help confirm distances, braking and the path of the sled in the seconds before the impact.

Sunday’s crash unfolded as Winter Storm Fern left icy patches on residential lanes and sidewalks, complicating travel and play. Local agencies responded to numerous weather-related calls over the weekend, including crashes and welfare checks. Police emphasized that the broader weather picture will be examined as part of the reconstruction, including pavement conditions and visibility on the shaded street corner where the sled struck the tree. Officials did not indicate when they expect to complete the analysis or whether citations or charges will follow.

Next steps include finishing measurements at the scene, mapping the curb line and tree location, and conducting interviews with the driver, passengers and bystanders. Detectives will also review 911 call audio to establish the first reports of the crash, cross-checking those times against patrol logs and fire response records. Once the preliminary report is complete, police said they will provide an update on case status and notify families before releasing additional details. Any prosecutorial decisions would be announced by the district attorney after the police file is reviewed.

By Monday, a small memorial of flowers and notes had appeared near the intersection, where rutted snow remained along the gutter and a dark mark scuffed the tree bark. “It’s a quiet street. We usually wave at each other,” said Mark Fischer, who walked by as crews removed tape. “This shook everyone.” Residents said they were waiting for word on the hospitalized teen while looking for ways to support the families in the days ahead.

Police said the investigation is active and more information will be released after interviews and reconstruction are complete this week. A further update is expected once the surviving teen’s condition is reassessed and next-of-kin notifications are finalized.
