Man dead, three wounded in quadruple shooting inside Philadelphia home

Three men were hospitalized in critical condition; detectives recovered two guns and are reviewing video.

PHILADELPHIA — A man was found dead at the doorway of a North Philadelphia home and three others were critically wounded after gunfire erupted before dawn Monday on the 1700 block of North Croskey Street in the Cecil B. Moore neighborhood, police said.

Detectives said officers arrived shortly after 4 a.m. to a narrow side street of attached homes just west of Broad Street. Inside the address, they found three men suffering from gunshot wounds and recovered two firearms. Investigators were still determining whether either weapon was used in the shooting and whether the man who died was the person who opened fire. Capt. Timothy Stephan said video from the area captured “a man entering the home just before 4 a.m.,” establishing a tight window before the 911 call that brought officers to the scene.

Police identified the surviving victims only by age: a 48-year-old man shot five times in the upper body, a 46-year-old man shot twice and a 54-year-old man shot once. Medics rushed all three to a nearby hospital, where they remained in critical condition. The deceased man, found near the front door, was not immediately identified. Officials said no arrests had been made and the motive was unknown as of late morning. Detectives canvassed for cameras, knocked on doors and marked evidence inside the property.

The shooting occurred in the Cecil B. Moore section, an area of North Philadelphia that includes tight residential blocks and small storefronts. Neighbors described waking to sirens and the glare of patrol lights raking brick facades. A man who lives down the block said he heard several sharp bangs and looked out to see officers running toward the house. Another neighbor said the street was quiet for most of the night. Police did not immediately confirm how many rounds were fired or whether shots were exchanged inside only or also outside the doorway.

Investigators said next steps include interviewing the wounded men when their conditions allow, collecting additional private security footage from nearby porches and intersections, and arranging ballistic analysis of the recovered guns and shell casings. Detectives will also review phone records or other digital evidence if obtained through search warrants. The medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to confirm the manner and cause of death for the man found at the entrance. Officials said they plan to release more details, including identities, after proper notifications.

Philadelphia’s Homicide Unit and the Shooting Investigation Group were both on scene before sunrise, according to police. The entrance of the home was taped off as crime scene officers photographed the threshold, bagged potential evidence and dusted surfaces. By daybreak, much of the block remained closed to traffic as technicians completed their work. “It’s frightening to wake up to that many police,” said a resident who declined to be named, adding that the activity began while it was still dark. The resident said the block has seen occasional disturbances, but nothing like an incident with four people shot inside one house.

As of Monday afternoon, police said the three hospitalized victims were still listed as critical and that the department would provide an update if a suspect is identified, if charges are approved or if testing links the recovered firearms to the shooting. The timing of the next briefing depends on lab results and interviews.
