Charity Pierce, Courageous Star of ‘My 600-lb Life,’ Passes Away at 50 After Inspiring Millions with Her Transformative Journey

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Charity Pierce, a figure widely recognized from the TLC series “My 600-lb Life,” has died at the age of 50 after a lengthy battle with health issues arising from obesity. Her daughter, Charly Jo, confirmed that Pierce passed away in hospice care at 1:20 AM on Tuesday, surrounded by family members.

Pierce’s journey captivated millions as part of the reality television landscape where her struggles with obesity and associated medical complications were painstakingly documented. Pierce, who appeared in the third season of the show in 2015, was under the medical guidance of Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, a bariatric surgeon based in Houston, who is prominent in the series.

From the beginning, Pierce had been open about her struggles with obesity, which began in her early teens and were compounded by a troubled childhood. By the age of 39, she weighed 778 pounds and was largely confined to her home due to severe lymphedema in her left leg. Pierce’s initial motivation for appearing on the show stemmed from her desperation for change, famously stating that she would rather face death than continue living in her condition.

Under Dr. Nowzaradan’s care, Pierce embarked on a radical transformation that saw her dramatically reduce her calorie intake from 10,000 to 1,200 calories per day while starting to incorporate exercise into her regimen. Within the first year, she lost 282 pounds. Her weight loss journey included weight loss surgery and multiple surgeries for skin removal, allowing her to regain much of the independence that her weight had taken from her.

However, Pierce’s path was marred by significant health and personal challenges. She suffered from multiple infections following skin removal surgeries, which were severe enough to require emergency interventions. One notable setback was an infection following one of these procedures, requiring further surgical intervention by Dr. Nowzaradan.

The emotional weight of her journey was also considerable. Pierce was unable to attend her mother’s funeral due to her recovery from gastric bypass surgery, a moment that added significant emotional strain. Additionally, her engagement to Tony Sauer, a supportive figure in her quest for health, ended after a personal betrayal involving her sister.

Despite these obstacles, Pierce continued her pursuit of a healthier life, exemplifying resilience and determination. By the 2020 update episode titled “Where Are They Now,” her weight had decreased to below 300 lbs.

Her daughter, Charly Jo, reflected on the loss with gratitude for the moments spent with her mother toward the end. “Charity fly high momma. I hope you know how much I love you and how grateful I was to be able to be by your side while you took your last breath,” Charly Jo wrote, sharing her thoughts on social media along with a poignant photo holding her mother’s hand.

Pierce’s public struggle with profound health challenges, including a battle with kidney cancer diagnosed in December 2019 that led to a kidney removal in March 2020, made her story one of vulnerability and strength. Her passing is deeply felt not only by family and friends but also by those who found inspiration in her televised journey from a life constrained by physical limitations to one of empowerment and regained autonomy.

Throughout her life, despite the mounting health battles and personal losses, Pierce’s enduring spirit and tenacity left a lasting impact on viewers and the public, making her story one of true transformation against formidable odds. Pierce leaves behind her daughter Charly Jo and two grandchildren.
