Police search for shooter after fatal stray bullet in Fort Worth

The 66-year-old victim was discovered after a fall call; an autopsy later confirmed a gunshot wound.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Fort Worth police are investigating a deadly shooting after a bullet fired from outside a home entered and struck a woman inside on Friday night. The incident happened on Tahiti Lane, where officers had fielded a shots-fired report earlier that evening.

Authorities said paramedics arrived around 8:51 p.m. for what was reported as a medical emergency involving a fall. The woman, 66, was taken to a hospital, where staff found evidence of a gunshot wound and notified detectives. Investigators now believe a single round traveled through the front of the house before hitting the victim. No arrests have been made. Police are seeking doorbell and security video from the hour before the call to track any car or person moving along Tahiti Lane and nearby intersections.

Detectives taped off the block through the night as crime scene teams documented the entry point on the front door and collected fragments from the threshold and interior wall. Officer Calzada said the team needs help filling in the timeline. “Check your cameras and let us know what you see,” Calzada said, adding that investigators think the bullet is connected to gunfire reported in the neighborhood roughly an hour earlier. The victim’s name has not been released pending family notification by the medical examiner.

Police have not described a suspect or a vehicle and have not said what kind of weapon was used. Technicians are testing material for ballistics; if a slug is recovered, analysts will compare markings against state and federal databases. Detectives are also matching 911 timestamps to any available camera footage to pinpoint when a car or person passed the house. Officers said there is no indication the victim was targeted, but they have not ruled out any possibilities until lab results and video reviews are complete.

Residents along the street said they heard several sharp cracks minutes before 9 p.m. “It sounded like it came from the corner,” said neighbor James Porter, who was walking his dog. Another resident, Denise Howard, placed flowers at the front steps Saturday morning. “She was a kind lady. We waved every evening,” Howard said. People on the block described a steady flow of patrol cars late Friday and a quiet, somber morning after crime scene tape came down.

As of Sunday night, no suspect information had been released. Police said the Tarrant County Medical Examiner would release the woman’s name and cause of death after an autopsy and next-of-kin notification. Detectives planned additional canvasses Monday to request higher-resolution video from homes and businesses in the area and to collect any audio files that captured gunshots and vehicles.
