Sandusky, OH — A Sandusky man, 44, has been arrested following accusations of a domestic altercation that reportedly resulted in harm to a woman and her toddler, as stated by the local police.
The incident came to light on July 18 when the victim visited the local police department. She was in search of assistance for a domestic issue when the details of the events that unfolded the previous day at her residence were disclosed to the authorities.
Officers learned that Thomas Vance, the accused, allegedly lost his temper and attacked the woman, reportedly choking her at one point during the conflict. Moreover, the incident report suggests that the 2-year-old child of the woman was also struck by Vance during the tumult. The mother purportedly endeavored to shield her child from Vance, attempting to escape by employing physical resistance.
Following the assault, the woman sought medical attention for injuries that included bruising, a swollen throat, and unusual bleeding. However, she left the hospital prematurely due to an extended wait, according to the police report.
When she discussed the events with the police, they noted visible bruising on her body. Although they offered to document the injuries through photographs, she declined. She expressed her reluctance to have Vance incarcerated during that weekend.
It also emerged during investigations that Vance allegedly had intimidated the woman, threatening to make her endure the pain he was experiencing himself.
The severity of the allegations and the evident injuries led police to press charges after failing to make contact with Vance in the days after the incident. He faces two counts each of assault and domestic violence, in addition to charges related to strangulation and endangerment of a child.
Investigative efforts uncovered a prior conviction for domestic violence against Vance dating back to 2005 in Tiffin, where the charges were escalated to a felony.
A warrant was issued for Vance’s arrest and he was detained on December 29. He has been released from custody since his arrest.
Vance is expected to appear in court for his preliminary hearing scheduled for this Friday. While Vance has been released, the investigation continues as authorities further review statements and gather additional evidence. The case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence and the community’s efforts to address these serious accusations.
