WILLISTON, FL – In a chilling episode in Levy County, a local woman has been arrested following the fatal shooting of her ex-husband, which she claims was an act of self-defense after enduring years of abuse. The incident unspooled in their shared residence, culminating in a deadly confrontation that has left the community reeling.
The accused, 55-year-old Laura Hawks, told law enforcement officials she was forced to use her ex-husband’s revolver during a violent altercation in which he allegedly tried to strangle her. The incident occurred early this week and ended tragically with 48-year-old Jason Hawks’ death.
Authorities arrived at the scene after a youth residing in the home discovered Jason’s body and made an urgent 911 call. The responding officers were met with a grisly scene; Jason had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Laura informed detectives that Jason’s initial wound was to the abdomen, after which she continued firing, later explaining that she believed she was sparing him further agony.
Further investigation revealed that prior to the shooting, the Hawks had endured a turbulent history marred by domestic disputes. On this occasion, Laura recounted a struggle for her life which led her to secretly arm herself the day before, fearing an imminent threat from Jason.
According to police reports, after the shooting, Laura stayed by Jason’s side for several hours as he lay bleeding. She reportedly tended to him with water and tea, demonstrating an unsettling calm by not seeking medical aid. After his death, she attempted to conceal his body with clothing and planned to bury him in their backyard, signaling a premeditated effort to hide her actions.
The behavior exhibited during and after the event has led to Laura Hawks facing severe legal consequences. She is charged with first-degree murder, along with failure to report a death and tampering with evidence. Currently, she is detained at Levy County Jail, held without bond.
This case draws additional complexity from its emotional and psychological layers, notably Laura’s claim that her actions were a direct response to longstanding fear and the immediate threat posed by her ex-husband. The incident also highlights the significant impacts of domestic violence and the desperate measures to which victims might resort.
No charges have been filed against the juvenile who alerted authorities, who was confirmed to be unscathed from the incident. The relationship and age of the youth within the Hawks family has been kept confidential by officials.
As detectives continue to sift through the evidence and further probe the couple’s violent past, the legal process is anticipated to unveil more about the dynamics of their troubled relationship. The case remains active, with additional findings expected to play a crucial role in upcoming legal proceedings.
