Daylight Gym Parking Lot Shooting in Mount Pleasant Leads to Attempted Homicide Charges

MOUNT PLEASANT, Pa. — A Pennsylvania man has been detained on multiple charges, including attempted homicide, following a violent altercation in which he allegedly shot his estranged wife’s boyfriend multiple times in a gym parking lot, authorities said Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Crossroads Plaza fitness center in Mount Pleasant, where Steven Heald, 38, confronted the man currently involved with his wife. A dispute escalated rapidly, culminating in Heald pulling a gun and firing several shots at the victim, according to police reports.

Eyewitnesses recounted how Heald did not flee immediately after the shooting. Instead, he reportedly assaulted the injured man further, striking him as he lay wounded, before eventually leaving the scene.

Following the attack, a nurse present at the gym provided critical first aid to the victim who sustained injuries including gunshot wounds to his shoulder, hip, buttocks, and thigh along with multiple lacerations. Emergency services praised her swift actions, which they believe significantly increased the shooting victim’s chances of survival.

The prompt medical intervention in the densely populated area played a crucial role in stabilizing the victim, who needed extensive medical attention by the time paramedics arrived.

Local law enforcement rapidly identified Heald as the assailant through a combination of victim and witness statements along with surveillance video from the area. Police also traced a black Ford pickup truck, believed to be utilized by Heald in his escape, back to his residence.

In a subsequent development, Heald turned himself into the police at the Connellsville Police Department, located less than 10 miles from Mount Pleasant. At the time of his surrender, he showed signs of the altercation, with blood on his shoes and marks on his knuckles.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from personal conflicts linked to the relationship dynamics between Heald, his estranged wife, and the victim. Despite prior communications between Heald and the victim, including in-person conversations and text exchanges, law enforcement had not been alerted to any threats of violence prior to the incident.

Heald now faces serious charges including attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and misdemeanor stalking. He has been denied bail and is being held at the Westmoreland County Prison awaiting further proceedings.

The court processed Heald’s initial arraignment on the same day as the shooting. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on January 21.

The victim’s identity remains confidential as he recovers from his injuries. Meanwhile, authorities continue their investigation, reviewing additional video evidence and further witness statements to ascertain the full scope of the incident.
