HIALEAH, FL – A Florida teenager has confessed to the brutal killing of his mother, pleading guilty to second-degree murder and bringing some closure to a grim saga that has shaken the Miami suburb. The then-13-year-old was accused of stabbing his mother nearly 50 times in an attack that has left lasting scars on the community and family alike.
In a Miami-Dade County courtroom, Derek Rosa, now 15, entered his plea before a judge on Friday. The young defendant, who committed the crime in October of the previous year, was handed a 25-year prison sentence followed by 20 years of probation. This resolution came as part of a plea agreement reached just days before what would have been a critical court appearance.
The murder charge stemmed from a horrifying incident in a family apartment in Hialeah, just north of downtown Miami. Late at night, Rosa reportedly attacked 39-year-old Irina Garcia as she slept beside her newborn daughter. Authorities reported that Rosa himself called 911 post-attack, providing a chilling account of his actions to the dispatcher.
