Knoxville, TN – A local woman has been arrested under grave allegations of neglect after her father was admitted to the hospital with critical injuries due to improper care. The 74-year-old man, suffering from advanced diabetes and immobility following a stroke nearly a decade ago, was found in a dire state by medical personnel early this January.
Misty McDaniel, 42, is facing charges of aggravated neglect of an elderly or vulnerable adult, resulting in serious bodily injury. Authorities detailed that as the primary caregiver, McDaniel’s duties to her father were grossly unfulfilled, leading to his severe deterioration over the past six months.
Medical reports from the hospital indicated disturbing findings, including life-threateningly high blood glucose levels that surpassed 600, a marker dangerously close to inducing diabetic coma. Additionally, doctors discovered multiple severe pressure ulcers and bedsores across his body, with some wounds so deep that muscles and bones were exposed.
In response to his condition, the victim was urgently placed in the critical care unit and underwent several surgeries to remove dead and infected tissue, reflecting the severity of his neglected state.
Further investigation by police revealed that McDaniel had neglected to administer essential diabetes medication to her father, even though it was available in their home. This critical oversight heightened his health risks considerably. Upon searching the residence, officers located the unadministered medication.
Court records bring to light another alarming aspect: the elderly man had not received professional medical attention for an extended period before this hospitalization, aggravating his health further. Although McDaniel’s husband was also mentioned as a secondary caregiver, he has not been charged at this time.
