Shots Fired Inside Milwaukee Hospital ER Waiting Room, Two Hit

Investigators did not say what led to the shooting or how the suspect entered with a gun.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A shooting inside Aurora Sinai Medical Center early Monday left one person critically injured and another wounded, and police took a 37-year-old man into custody after officers were called to the hospital at about 2:15 a.m., authorities said. The victims were 40 and 38 years old, police said.

The gunfire erupted in a setting where patients typically wait for care, prompting lockdown-like conditions in parts of the building as officers moved through hallways and investigators began collecting evidence. The episode rattled staff, patients, and visitors and forced the hospital and law enforcement to reassure the public within hours that there was no ongoing risk and that the medical center remained open.

Milwaukee police said they responded to reports of a person with a gun at the hospital near North 12th Street and West State Street. In the minutes that followed, law enforcement converged from multiple agencies, and dispatch traffic indicated an urgent effort to secure the lobby and surrounding areas. By the time a local TV crew arrived, the scene outside was still tense, with police controlling access points and first responders moving quickly in and out of the building. Investigators later said the suspect had been taken into custody in connection with the shooting, and police described the threat as contained.

Authorities said a 40-year-old victim was being treated for a life-threatening gunshot injury. A second victim, 38, was treated for a gunshot wound that was not considered life-threatening, police said. The victims were not identified, and police did not say whether they were related, whether they had arrived together, or whether either person was being treated for other medical issues when the shooting happened. Officials also did not say whether anyone else was injured during the rush for safety, a common concern during sudden violence in crowded public spaces.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said deputies happened to be at the hospital for an unrelated inmate transportation matter when the call came in, an overlap that may have shortened response time. The sheriff’s office described the emergency room waiting area as part of the initial focus of the response, with two victims in that area. Police did not say Monday morning whether the suspect fired immediately upon entering, argued with anyone beforehand, or moved through the building. They also did not release information about a motive, a possible relationship between the suspect and victims, or whether the gun was recovered at the scene.

Aurora Health Care, which operates the hospital, said it coordinated with law enforcement and that the facility stayed open after the shooting. “Earlier this morning, we worked with law enforcement in response to a situation inside our facility,” the health system said in a statement, adding that it was grateful for officers’ rapid response and “continued partnership.” Aurora said care was being provided for those affected and that there was no ongoing risk to the public. Police similarly said there was no active threat after the suspect was detained.

While investigators worked to establish a clear timeline, people connected to the hospital described a sense of disbelief that violence could break out in a place meant for treatment. One man who said he was inside the hospital at the time said the shooting changed how he viewed the safety of the setting. “That’s crazy,” he said, adding that it made him wonder whether anyone could feel safe even in a hospital. Outside, officers continued to come and go as dawn approached, with some entrances restricted and patrol vehicles positioned to keep lanes clear for emergency access.

Authorities did not announce charges Monday morning, and they did not release the suspect’s name or say when a court appearance might take place. Police said investigators were still working to determine what led to the shooting and how the suspect got into the hospital with a gun. Detectives were expected to interview witnesses, review any available surveillance footage, and coordinate with prosecutors on potential criminal counts tied to the two victims’ injuries.

As of Monday morning, police said the scene had been stabilized and the hospital remained open, but the investigation was continuing and key details remained unanswered, including why the victims were in the waiting area and what set off the gunfire. Officials said additional information would be released as the case develops later Monday.
