One Killed, Another Wounded in Violent Fresno Apartment Ambush

Police say the gunfire followed a disturbance involving people who did not live at the northwest Fresno property.

FRESNO, Calif. — A 32-year-old man was killed and a 22-year-old man was wounded early Sunday in a shooting at a northwest Fresno apartment complex, where police said a disturbance broke out before an armed suspect fled the area by car.

The shooting happened at the Colonia Del Sol apartments near Barstow and Blackstone avenues, adding to Fresno’s homicide count during the opening months of 2026. Investigators say the case began as a dispute tied to a resident at the complex and quickly turned deadly. One man died after being rushed to the hospital, while the second survived. Detectives have not announced an arrest, and police said the shooter remained unidentified as the investigation moved into its second week.

Officers from Fresno’s Northwest Policing District were called to the complex at about 12:32 a.m. Sunday after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found 32-year-old Shannon Ivory in the carport area with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Officers and emergency crews began first aid before Ivory was taken to Community Regional Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m. During the investigation, officers located a second victim, a 22-year-old man, on an upstairs landing with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Police spokesperson Brian Valdez said there were signs a shot may have been fired inside an apartment, but investigators determined both men were shot in the carport area.

Police said neither victim lived at the apartment complex. Investigators believe both men were there with a woman who had gone to pick up belongings. At some point, authorities said, a disturbance broke out involving the victims and a resident of the property. Fresno police said someone associated with that resident then pulled a gun and opened fire. “During some of that time at that apartment, a disturbance occurred, at which point they were shot,” Valdez said in remarks carried by local television coverage. Detectives said the gunman fled in a vehicle headed east on Barstow Avenue. Police have not released a suspect name, a vehicle description, or any information about whether the woman connected to the visit was injured or remained at the scene.

The killing was reported as Fresno’s fifth homicide of the year, compared with two at the same point last year, according to police statements cited by local outlets. That comparison gave the shooting broader weight beyond a single apartment complex, especially as officers have responded to several recent acts of gun violence across the city. The Colonia Del Sol complex sits in a busy part of northwest Fresno near major roads and apartment clusters, a setting where overnight violence can leave neighbors shaken even when the people involved do not live there. Police said detectives canvassed the neighborhood for surveillance video and witnesses in the hours after the shooting.

No charges had been announced as of Monday, March 23, and Fresno police had not publicly identified the suspected shooter. The case remained a homicide investigation, with detectives working alongside prosecutors as they reviewed witness statements, physical evidence and any available video. Police have said they are trying to move quickly but carefully enough to support a future prosecution. The surviving 22-year-old victim was reported in stable condition after being taken to the hospital. Authorities have not said whether that man has been interviewed in full, whether any firearm was recovered, or whether investigators believe more than one suspect may have been involved.

Residents in apartment neighborhoods often wake to flashing lights, taped-off parking stalls and a wave of unanswered questions, and this case appeared no different. By daylight Sunday, the focus had shifted from emergency response to reconstruction: who arrived with whom, how the disturbance started, and who decided to fire. Valdez said police send extra patrols into affected areas after violence to calm fears and maintain a visible presence. He said investigators are also working with the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office to build cases that can hold up in court. For now, the deadliest facts are settled, but the motive, the trigger for the fight and the identity of the gunman remain unresolved.

The case stood Monday without an arrest, with detectives still seeking evidence tied to the shooting at the Colonia Del Sol complex. The next milestone is the public identification of a suspect or the filing of criminal charges, if investigators are able to make an arrest.
