Off-duty Cumberland captain killed in Hope Mills shooting

Investigators say the shooting involved another off-duty law enforcement officer and does not appear to pose a public threat.

HOPE MILLS, N.C. — A late-night shooting at a home in Hope Mills left Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Adam Bean dead after what authorities described as a dispute involving another off-duty law enforcement officer.

Deputies were called at 10:53 p.m. Friday to the 1600 block of Seattle Slew Lane, where they found Bean suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. By the next day, sheriff’s officials had identified the victim and said the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was helping examine what led to the shooting.

Officials have released only a narrow outline of the case so far. The sheriff’s office said the shooting happened during a dispute between Bean and another off-duty officer, but authorities have not publicly identified that person, described the agency involved or said whether anyone has been charged. Investigators also have not explained the relationship between the two people or what happened in the moments before the gunfire.

Bean had served with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office since March 2006 and most recently held the rank of captain while serving as assistant chief of detectives. That background turned the case into more than a routine homicide investigation. It became the death of a longtime law enforcement supervisor whose career was tied closely to the county agency now waiting for answers from outside investigators.

The SBI’s role also signals the sensitivity of the case. North Carolina agencies commonly ask the bureau to assist when shootings involve law enforcement officers or raise conflict concerns for local investigators. In this case, the sheriff’s office has emphasized that the shooting was not random and that there appears to be no ongoing threat to the public, while the SBI has said it had no new information to release as of Saturday evening.

That left the public with a short but important timeline: a Friday night call, a death at the scene, identification of the victim by Saturday, and an active investigation still in its earliest stage. Investigators have not released a probable cause summary, court filing or arrest announcement. No hearing date, charging decision or public briefing had been announced in the immediate aftermath.

For now, the case stands at the point where basic facts are confirmed but the central questions remain open. Bean is dead, another off-duty officer is known to have been involved, and state investigators are working to reconstruct what happened inside the home. The next major milestone is expected to be any SBI update on the sequence of events, the status of the second officer and whether criminal charges will follow.
