One dead, two hurt in Galena Park court shooting

Investigators say a possible fight broke out before more than 20 shots were fired near a community center basketball court.

GALENA PARK, Texas — One man was killed and two others were critically wounded after gunfire erupted Sunday night near a basketball court at the Alvin D. Baggett Community Center, where investigators say a possible altercation broke out before a vehicle approached and shots rang out.

Authorities said the shooting unfolded at about 9:45 p.m. near Keene Street in the Galena Park area, leaving one victim dead at the scene and sending two other young men to a hospital in critical condition. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said investigators were still working Monday to determine exactly what sparked the violence, whether the gunfire came from one shooter or more than one person, and whether anyone else may have been struck during the chaos. The victims were described as men in their late teens or early 20s.

The first emergency calls brought sheriff’s deputies and local police to the court area late Sunday, when people were still scattered around the scene and investigators were trying to piece together the sequence of events. Gonzalez said a group of men had been gathered at the basketball court when a possible fight began between two groups. At some point, a vehicle approached and more than 20 shots were fired, according to the sheriff. “This is a dangerous thing that happened,” Gonzalez said as investigators worked the scene. He added that “anybody could have been hurt,” underscoring how many rounds were fired in a public place where people had been gathered only moments earlier.

Investigators said one victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were found nearby after trying to get away from the gunfire, according to accounts from officials at the scene. Those two men were taken to a hospital in critical condition. Authorities said Monday that they had not publicly identified any of the victims. Gonzalez also said investigators were trying to learn whether one person who may have been detained at the scene was a bystander, a witness or someone directly tied to the shooting. That uncertainty reflected the early stage of the case, with detectives still sorting witness statements, the positions of people at the court and the direction from which the shots were fired.

The violence unfolded at or near a neighborhood gathering place that serves young residents and families in Galena Park. The sheriff’s office said multiple agencies responded or assisted, including Galena Park police and other law enforcement personnel in the area. By Monday, officials were still trying to determine whether all of the rounds were fired from the vehicle Gonzalez mentioned or whether there had been an exchange of gunfire involving people already at the court. That distinction could shape how the case is investigated, including whether detectives treat the shooting as an ambush following an argument, a confrontation that escalated into crossfire, or some other sequence that has not yet been confirmed.

What authorities do know is that the shooting happened quickly and in a place where many people could have been put at risk. Gonzalez said detectives were also working to determine whether there were additional victims who left before officers arrived. Public shootings in community spaces often leave behind confused witness accounts, shell casings spread across a wide area and video evidence that must be collected from city cameras, nearby homes, passing vehicles or the community center itself. Officials have not said how many people were at the court when the shots were fired, but the sheriff’s description suggested the gathering was larger than just the three men who were shot.

By Monday, the investigation remained open with no public announcement of a motive and no confirmed suspect information released. Authorities asked for tips from anyone who saw the fight, the vehicle or the moments just before the shooting. Detectives were expected to continue reviewing evidence from the scene, interviewing witnesses and tracing the movements of the vehicle described by Gonzalez. The next major step in the case is likely to be the public identification of the man who died, along with any update on the condition of the two surviving victims and whether charges will be filed.
