Police say at least 27 shots were fired near 60th and Market streets.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A 20-year-old woman was killed and two other people were injured in a triple shooting Tuesday evening in West Philadelphia, where investigators say multiple gunmen opened fire on a city street.
Police said the shooting happened around 6:20 p.m. near 60th and Market streets, a busy commercial corridor. Officers arriving at the scene found three victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The woman later died at a nearby hospital, while the other two victims survived, raising urgent questions about the motive and whether the attack was targeted.
According to investigators, the 20-year-old woman was walking alone while carrying food she had just purchased when a dark-colored SUV pulled up. Surveillance footage reviewed by police shows three men getting out of the vehicle and firing multiple rounds in her direction. Chief Inspector Scott Small said the front passenger approached the victim after she fell and fired additional shots at close range.
Authorities recovered 27 spent shell casings at the scene, indicating at least that many shots were fired. Police said the gunfire came from two different semi-automatic weapons, and at least some of the shots appeared to have been fired from a rifle. The volume of gunfire and use of multiple weapons have intensified the investigation as detectives work to identify those involved.
A 55-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were also struck during the shooting and transported to the hospital. Both were listed in stable condition, according to police. Investigators have not determined whether the two survivors were intended targets or were hit by stray bullets during the attack.
Officials said the entire incident was captured on surveillance cameras in the area, which could provide key evidence in identifying the suspects and reconstructing the sequence of events. Detectives are reviewing video footage from nearby businesses and canvassing the neighborhood for additional witnesses.
The names of the victims have not been released, and police have not announced any arrests. Authorities also have not disclosed a possible motive, leaving unanswered whether the shooting was connected to a personal dispute, retaliation, or another form of targeted violence.
Gun violence has remained a persistent concern in parts of Philadelphia, including neighborhoods in West Philadelphia where police have increased patrols and investigative efforts in response to recent incidents. The scale and apparent coordination of Tuesday’s shooting have drawn attention from homicide investigators and city officials.
Police said the case is being handled by the department’s Homicide Unit, which is continuing to gather evidence and follow leads. Investigators are expected to provide updates as they analyze surveillance footage and forensic evidence collected from the scene.
The investigation remained active Wednesday, with authorities seeking information about the suspects and the vehicle involved. Officials said further details could emerge as the review of evidence continues in the coming days.
