Two people were hurt late Sunday at the Showboat Resort, and investigators say no arrests had been announced by Tuesday.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A man was stabbed and a woman was assaulted during a late-night altercation at the Showboat Resort in Atlantic City, police said, sending both victims to a hospital and prompting an ongoing investigation at the Boardwalk property.
Atlantic City police said officers were called to the resort at 10:37 p.m. Sunday, April 5, on a report of a stabbing. The case drew added attention because it happened inside a family-focused hotel and indoor waterpark complex during a busy spring break period. By Tuesday, investigators had not announced any arrests, had not identified the people involved and had not publicly explained what started the violence.
When officers arrived, they found a 38-year-old woman from Severn, Maryland, who police said had been assaulted. She was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division, with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Police later determined that a 38-year-old man from Newark had also been stabbed during the same incident but had left before officers got there. Authorities said friends drove him to the same hospital, and his injuries also were described as nonfatal. The reported violence unfolded at the Showboat Resort at 801 Boardwalk, a large beachfront hotel that markets itself as a family destination with an arcade and indoor waterpark.
What happened in the moments before the injuries remains unclear. Police have said only that the stabbing and assault took place during an altercation. A Showboat spokesperson gave a slightly fuller account, saying the confrontation involved two men and one woman. The spokesperson also said the hotel turned surveillance video over to investigators. In an earlier account to NBC10, a resort spokesperson said the fight began inside one of the property’s restaurants at about 11 p.m. and escalated from there. That account differed in one respect from police statements: the spokesperson initially described two stabbing victims, while police later said one victim was stabbed and the other was assaulted. Investigators have not publicly explained the difference.
The resort appeared to return to normal operations by the next day, even as police continued reviewing evidence. Guests checking in Monday told local television crews they had seen or heard the emergency response late Sunday. Drew Ingwersen of Clementon said he and his family were in their room when they noticed activity outside. “I heard sirens and we were watching out the window. We saw a fire truck, ambulance, about 15 cop cars,” he said. Another guest, Paul Water of Long Island, said his first concern was how quickly security reached the scene and whether anyone else could have been hurt. The comments captured the unease that followed the violence at a resort that often draws families and children.
Showboat, which does not operate a casino but sits among Atlantic City’s larger tourism properties, called the incident “extremely isolated” and said it takes the safety of guests and staff “very seriously.” The hotel said it immediately referred the matter to Atlantic City police and shared security footage. That response left several key questions unanswered, including whether anyone involved knew one another, whether a weapon has been recovered and whether alcohol or another dispute played a role. Police also have not said exactly where inside the resort the confrontation began or where each victim was found. Local reports said video from inside the property circulated online as investigators worked to piece together the sequence.
The next step is in the hands of detectives, who are reviewing video and witness accounts while trying to identify all of the people involved. As of the latest public updates, no charges had been filed and police had not released the names of either victim. Investigators asked anyone with information to contact the department. For now, the case stands as an open assault and stabbing investigation tied to one of Atlantic City’s best-known Boardwalk resorts, with authorities still working to pin down a motive and establish a full timeline.
