Police say a second person at the scene was also injured as investigators search for answers.
HOUSTON, Texas — A woman was shot and killed Saturday afternoon along Fondren Road in southwest Houston, police said, after officers were called to reports of gunfire near a busy intersection just before 4 p.m.
The shooting unfolded in a commercial area near South Braeswood, drawing a large police response and shutting down portions of the roadway. Authorities said the woman died at the scene, while another individual was also injured, though details about that person’s condition remained limited as the investigation continued.
Houston police said officers were dispatched around 3:57 p.m. after multiple callers reported gunshots in the area. When officers arrived, they found the woman with gunshot wounds in a parking lot. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Investigators said a second person at the location appeared to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though officials had not confirmed the sequence of events or whether the two individuals knew each other. “We’re still working to piece together exactly what happened here,” a police spokesperson said at the scene.
Authorities secured the area with crime scene tape as detectives interviewed witnesses and collected evidence. Several businesses nearby were temporarily closed, and traffic was diverted as officers processed the scene. Police have not released the identity of the woman, pending notification of family members. It was also unclear whether any suspects were being sought or if the case was being treated as an isolated incident. Officials said they were reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and asking anyone with information to come forward.
The shooting is the latest in a series of violent incidents reported in southwest Houston, a region that has seen multiple high-profile cases in recent months. Investigators have not indicated any connection between those incidents and Saturday’s shooting. Still, the location—near a heavily traveled corridor lined with shops and apartments—raised concerns among residents and workers who described the area as typically busy during the afternoon hours.
Police said the case remains under active investigation, with homicide detectives leading the effort to determine what led to the shooting. Authorities have not announced any arrests or charges. Officials are expected to provide additional updates once more information becomes available, including the identities of those involved and any possible motive.
Witnesses in the area described hearing multiple gunshots followed by a heavy police presence within minutes. Some said they saw emergency crews attempting to render aid before the scene was secured. “It all happened so fast,” one nearby worker said, describing the sudden disruption during the afternoon. Others expressed concern about safety in the area, noting the number of people typically walking or driving through the corridor at that time of day.
The investigation remains ongoing as of Saturday evening, with police continuing to gather evidence and speak with potential witnesses. Authorities have not provided a timeline for when additional details will be released but said updates could come as early as the next scheduled briefing.
