Wife and Stepson Hospitalized After Brutal Hatchet Attack, Sheriff Says

Authorities say a domestic dispute escalated into a violent assault in Pontotoc County.

ROFF, Okla. — A man is in custody after authorities say he attacked his wife and stepson with a hatchet Friday in a rural Oklahoma community, leaving both victims seriously injured and prompting an emergency response from local law enforcement.

Investigators say the incident unfolded inside a home in Pontotoc County, where deputies arrived to find what officials described as a violent and chaotic scene. Both victims were transported to a hospital for treatment, while the suspect was taken into custody. Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved as the investigation remains active.

According to the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a weapon. When they arrived, they discovered two victims suffering from injuries consistent with a hatchet attack. Sheriff John Christian said the scene was severe, describing it as a “horrific crime scene” as first responders worked to secure the area and provide aid.

Officials said the suspect, identified as the husband and stepfather of the victims, was still at or near the residence when deputies arrived. He was detained without incident and later booked into the county jail. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive but confirmed the attack appears to stem from a domestic situation inside the home.

Emergency medical crews transported both the woman and her son to a nearby hospital. Their exact conditions have not been publicly released, though officials indicated the injuries were serious. Law enforcement has not confirmed the ages of the victims but described the stepson as a juvenile.

Neighbors in the quiet rural town of Roff expressed shock at the violence. The area, known for its small population and close-knit community, rarely sees incidents of this magnitude. Residents said they observed multiple emergency vehicles responding to the home Friday, with law enforcement remaining on scene for several hours.

Authorities spent much of the day processing evidence at the residence, collecting items and documenting the scene as part of their investigation. Officials have not said whether additional weapons were involved or if there had been prior reports of disturbances at the home.

The suspect is expected to face multiple charges related to the attack, though formal charges had not been announced as of Friday evening. Investigators said they are working with prosecutors to determine the appropriate counts based on the severity of the injuries and circumstances of the case.

Officials indicated more information could be released as the investigation progresses, including the identities of those involved and potential court dates. The case remains under active review by local authorities.
