Police said a rifle-wielding suspect fired into the victim’s vehicle before leaving the scene.
HOUSTON, Texas — A 36-year-old man died after he was shot while sitting in a vehicle at a northeast Houston intersection Wednesday night, police said.
Houston police said the shooting happened about 8:45 p.m. April 22 in the 4200 block of Laura Koppe Road, near Hirsch Road. The man’s name had not been released Thursday while officials worked to confirm his identity and notify relatives.
Investigators said the victim was stopped in traffic when an SUV pulled up nearby. A person got out with a rifle and fired several rounds into the victim’s vehicle, police said. Houston Fire Department crews took the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Lt. R. Willkens said the victim was hit many times. “He suffered gunshots all over his body,” Willkens said. Police found shell casings at the scene, but no suspect had been identified by Thursday afternoon.
HPD Homicide Division detectives A. Hernandez and R. Waterwall are leading the investigation. Police had not released a motive, a detailed suspect description or a confirmed license plate number for the vehicle involved.
The shooting left investigators focused on traffic near Laura Koppe and Hirsch, a busy northeast Houston area with homes, businesses and neighborhood roads nearby. Police said witnesses may have seen the SUV before or after the gunfire.
No charges had been announced. Police said the case remains active as detectives review evidence from the scene and seek information that could identify the person who opened fire.
The victim’s identity was pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. The next update is expected after investigators confirm his name and determine whether an arrest has been made.
