Missing 19-Year-Old Found Dead Months After Vanishing in Anchorage

The 19-year-old was last known to have left an Anchorage home Jan. 7.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Anchorage police said the body found outside on Lois Drive has been identified as Kelly Hunt, a 19-year-old who had been missing for more than three months.

The case began in early January, when police said Hunt came to Anchorage on Jan. 6 and stayed at a home in the 3200 block of Oregon Drive. She left that home on the morning of Jan. 7. Four days later, on Jan. 11, she was reported missing to police, who assigned detectives to investigate.

On April 20, officers were called to the 3500 block of Lois Drive after a report of a deceased person outside. Police later confirmed the person was Hunt. Authorities said her family had been notified before the identification was released publicly.

Police have not released Hunt’s cause of death. The State Medical Examiner is expected to make that determination. Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case said investigators are still working through the evidence before deciding whether the death will be closed as a death investigation or shifted into a homicide investigation.

“Anytime one of our young people go missing and then they end up deceased, it’s a tragedy,” Case said. He said the case has caused concern in the community and in Alaska Native communities, while adding that detectives cannot release every detail while the investigation is active.

Hunt’s family said it was grateful to those who searched, shared information and supported them after she disappeared. The family said the community’s help showed care and strength during a difficult period.

No arrests had been announced as of Sunday. Police said detectives are continuing to investigate with urgency and accuracy while they await findings from the medical examiner.
