The wounded driver had been picking up a DoorDash order nearby, police said.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Metro Nashville police are investigating a fatal shooting outside a Berry Hill Walgreens after an attempted carjacking left the suspect dead and a delivery driver seriously wounded Saturday afternoon.
The case began when a 44-year-old DoorDash driver parked outside the Walgreens on 8th Avenue South and walked across the street to Chick-fil-A for a delivery order, police said. When the driver returned, a man armed with a gun approached and tried to take the vehicle.
Metro Nashville Police Department spokesperson Don Aaron said the driver had a gun under his seat and reached for it during the confrontation. Aaron said the suspect appeared to see the weapon as the driver got out of the car. The suspect shot the driver once in the leg, and the driver returned fire, killing the suspect.
The shooting drew witnesses from nearby businesses and streets in the Berry Hill area. One witness said he heard “a bunch” of gunshots and ran toward the scene, where he found the wounded driver calling for help. The witness also reported seeing another vehicle leave the area, though police said it was too early to say whether that vehicle was connected.
Authorities said the suspect had no identification on him when he died. Investigators were working to confirm his name through fingerprints. Police said surveillance video and interviews with the wounded driver have helped detectives understand what happened, but the case has not been closed.
No charges had been announced in the shooting as police continued to review evidence. Investigators were expected to keep examining video, witness accounts and forensic evidence from the Walgreens parking lot and nearby businesses along 8th Avenue South.
