One Killed, Two Hurt In Midtown Parking Lot Shooting

Houston police detained two possible suspects after gunfire broke out near Milam and Anita streets.

HOUSTON, Texas — One man was killed and two others were wounded early Monday after a fight turned into gunfire in a Midtown parking lot near Milam and Anita streets, Houston police said.

Police said the shooting happened about 2:10 a.m. as people were leaving a nearby club and walking through a crowded parking area. Officers working an extra job at the club heard several shots from across the street and moved toward the gunfire.

Investigators said several men appeared to be fighting when at least one person pulled a gun and fired. Three men were hit. One victim collapsed at the scene and later died at a hospital. A second man ran across the street before collapsing and was listed in critical condition. A third man, who was shot in the arm, got to a hospital in a private vehicle.

Houston police Lt. J.P. Horelica said officers quickly found victims after hearing the shots. “There was a lot of people walking to their vehicles in the parking lot,” Horelica said. Police said two possible suspects were detained, but officials had not announced charges or released their names Monday morning.

One officer saw a man with a weapon and chased him, police said. By the time the man was detained, the weapon was no longer in his possession. Investigators were still working to determine whether the gun had been passed to someone else and whether it had been recovered.

The shooting happened near the 3000 block of Milam Street, close to Anita Street, in a busy part of Midtown known for late-night crowds. Police said it was not clear whether the people involved had been inside the nearby club before the shooting.

The Houston Police Department’s homicide division is leading the investigation. Detectives were reviewing what happened before the fight, who fired the shots and whether more people were involved. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences had not publicly identified the man who died.

As of Monday, police said one man was dead, one remained in critical condition and another was treated for an arm wound. The next step in the case is a charging decision after detectives review witness statements, video and evidence from the scene.
