MARTA police said one person was taken into custody after gunfire Monday evening.
ATLANTA, Ga. — MARTA police arrested a suspected shooter Monday evening after a man was shot and killed at the Oakland City bus loop in southwest Atlanta, authorities said.
The shooting drew a large police response just after 6 p.m. at the transit stop, where officers found the wounded man. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Police had not released the victim’s name or the suspect’s name as of Tuesday.
MARTA Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire at the Oakland City bus loop, a busy transfer area connected to the rail station. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. A perimeter was set up while investigators secured the area and searched for evidence. A person believed to be the shooter was later taken into custody, police said. MARTA police said “the investigation remains active” as officers work to determine what led to the shooting.
Authorities have not said whether the victim and suspect knew each other. They also have not said how many shots were fired, what type of weapon was used or whether any other people were hurt. It was not immediately clear whether bus or rail service was delayed by the investigation. The Oakland City station serves riders in southwest Atlanta and connects passengers to bus routes and MARTA’s rail system.
The shooting comes months after separate violence involving MARTA police at other transit locations. In August 2025, authorities said two MARTA officers were shot at Five Points station during an attempted arrest. Police later arrested a suspect in Alabama. At the time, MARTA Police Chief M. Scott Kreher said officers were focused on keeping the system safe and responding to crime inside stations and on transit property.
Investigators are expected to review witness statements, surveillance video and physical evidence from the bus loop. Police had not announced charges by Tuesday morning. The Fulton County medical examiner’s office is expected to identify the man after relatives are notified.
The station area was quiet after officers cleared the scene, but the killing left new questions for riders and nearby residents. Police have not released a motive. The next update is expected from MARTA police as the investigation moves forward.
