Woman Found Dead After Kenosha Street Altercation

A suspect was detained and a second man was found seriously injured.

KENOSHA, Wis. — Kenosha police are investigating the death of 37-year-old Stephanie Birn after officers responding Saturday to a reported altercation found one man seriously hurt outside and Birn dead inside a nearby home.

The case began about 3:30 p.m. April 25 near 13th Avenue and 57th Street, where a 911 caller reported an altercation between two adult men. Police said 42-year-old Dale Dallia, a Kenosha resident, was detained as he tried to leave the area. He is being held on a probation hold while detectives review possible charges with the Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office.

Officers first found a 41-year-old Kenosha man on the ground with serious injuries. Police gave first aid until Kenosha Fire Department crews arrived and took over medical care. During the investigation, officers received information about a possible second victim inside a home. They entered and found Birn dead, police said.

Authorities have not released Birn’s cause of death or said what led to the altercation. Police also have not detailed the relationship, if any, between Birn, Dallia and the injured man. Detectives continued processing evidence, interviewing witnesses and canvassing the area after the discovery.

Birn’s death drew grief from people who knew her. Karyn Pedraza, a friend, said Birn was a mother who leaves behind an 11-year-old son. “It’s absolutely destroyed me,” Pedraza said. “She loved fiercely. She would do anything for anyone.”

Police said Dallia was detained without incident. No formal homicide charge had been announced in the report, and investigators were consulting prosecutors as the case developed.
