Man found dead after Northwest Austin homicide call

Austin police said the case appears isolated and one person of interest is cooperating.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man was found dead Friday evening after Austin police responded to a homicide call in a Northwest Austin neighborhood near Wallace Drive and Gardenridge Hollow.

The Austin Police Department said officers were sent to the area at about 6:06 p.m. May 8 for a shoot or stab hotshot call. The death is being investigated as Austin’s 23rd homicide of the year. Police said a person of interest was detained and that the public was not believed to be in danger.

Police said responding officers found the victim with injuries to his body after they arrived near Wallace Drive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. CBS Austin reported that the man was found outside and that Star Flight had been requested before officials determined he had died. Authorities had not released the victim’s name, age or hometown by the latest public update.

Early information from investigators pointed to a male suspect, police said. Authorities said they believed the suspect and victim lived near each other or within the same vicinity. Police did not say whether an argument, domestic dispute or other event came before the shooting. Officials also did not identify the detained person of interest or say whether that person would face charges.

The call brought officers, detectives and emergency crews into a residential area of Northwest Austin on Friday evening. Police said the incident was isolated, meaning investigators did not believe there was a wider threat. The area near Wallace Drive and Gardenridge Hollow remained part of the active investigation as officers worked to document the scene and gather evidence.

The case adds to Austin’s homicide investigations in 2026. Police said it was the city’s 23rd homicide of the year. Earlier public reports listed a separate deadly shooting in the Austin area as the 22nd homicide. In the new case, several key facts remained unknown, including the victim’s identity, the exact cause of the confrontation and whether detectives recovered a weapon.

Police said the person of interest was cooperating with investigators. The next major step is likely the release of the victim’s identity after family notification. Detectives also are expected to prepare reports for prosecutors if evidence supports criminal charges. No court date, arrest affidavit or booking information had been announced in the public updates.

Officials asked anyone with information to contact Austin police homicide investigators or Austin Crime Stoppers. The case remained open Sunday, with police still working to determine what happened before officers arrived at the Northwest Austin scene.
