Woman, 4-Year-Old Girl Killed in Largo Mobile Home Fire

A man escaped with injuries after flames engulfed a home at Westgate Mobile Home Park.

LARGO, Fla. — A woman and a 4-year-old girl died early Monday after a fire swept through a mobile home at Westgate Mobile Home Park in Largo, fire officials said.

Largo Fire Rescue said crews were called about 2:20 a.m. May 11 to the 14000 block of Belcher Road South, where firefighters found heavy flames coming from a home in the park. Three people were inside. The woman and child were found dead at the scene, and an adult man was taken to a hospital.

Officials said the man was in stable condition after the fire. Neighbors identified him as the child’s father and said the woman who died was the girl’s grandmother. Fire officials had not released the victims’ names as of Tuesday. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, and officials have not said what may have started it.

Residents described waking to flames, smoke and screams in the dark mobile home park. Neighbor Dominic McCray said he saw “a burst of flames” and thick smoke when he came outside. Jose Ubiles, another neighbor, said the family was well known in the park and that the girl was often seen outside riding her bike and playing with other children.

Firefighters from Largo were assisted by nearby agencies, including Pinellas Park and Seminole Fire Rescue. Officials said the home was in a back area of the mobile home park, and crews had to stretch hoses a long distance to reach it. The home was already heavily involved when firefighters arrived.

The deaths left residents shaken at Westgate Mobile Home Park, a residential community near Belcher Road South and 142nd Street. Neighbors said the child’s death was especially hard for the close community. “She was an amazing little girl,” Ubiles said. He said the girl was loved by neighbors and spent much of her time playing outside like other children in the park.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office continued its review Tuesday. No cause had been announced, and officials had not reported any criminal finding. Fire officials said more information would be released after investigators complete the next steps in the case.
