Greyhound Passenger Robbed Before Shots Fly, Police Say

Police say a theft report near Forsyth Street turned into a shooting investigation.

ATLANTA, Ga. — A shooting near downtown Atlanta’s Greyhound bus station Tuesday morning left two men hospitalized, grazed a bystander and ended with charges against three men, according to Atlanta police.

The gunfire was reported about 6:24 a.m. near 200 Forsyth St. SW, close to the Garnett MARTA station. Police said officers found two men with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to a hospital in stable condition. A third person was treated at the scene for a graze wound to the head.

Police said the shooting followed an alleged theft involving a man waiting for a bus. Investigators said the man was first approached by another man asking for a cigarette. The same man later returned and asked for money, police said. Authorities said the encounter escalated after a wallet was taken.

Michael Mulligan was charged with sudden snatch theft, police said. Brandon Sellers and Michael Wilcoxson were charged with aggravated assault. Police said four men were detained at first, but one was released after investigators reviewed the early facts of the case.

The shooting happened in one of downtown Atlanta’s busiest transit corridors. The Greyhound station and Garnett MARTA station sit near Forsyth and Brotherton streets, where bus passengers, rail riders and workers move through the area early each morning. The police response brought attention to a block that serves both regional bus travel and local rail service.

A witness told FOX 5 Atlanta that multiple shots were heard before at least one person was seen on the ground. Police have not said how many shots were fired, whether more than one gun was used or whether any weapon was recovered. The exact roles of each charged man remain part of the investigation.

The case now moves from the scene investigation to the courts. Police have released the charges, but further details may come through arrest records, court filings or later statements from investigators. The conditions of the two hospitalized men were last described as stable.
