Police said bystanders disarmed the suspect and held him until officers arrived.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Two people were shot and killed Tuesday morning inside a Smith’s grocery store in south Las Vegas, where police said bystanders tackled and disarmed the suspect before officers took him into custody.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said the shooting was reported about 11:24 a.m. at the store in the 9700 block of South Maryland Parkway, near East Silverado Ranch Boulevard. The victims, a man and a woman in their mid-40s, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect was identified as Alejandro Alfonso Estrada. Police said at least three bystanders confronted him near the pharmacy drive-thru, took him to the ground and held him until officers arrived. Investigators said there was no continuing threat to the public after the arrest.
An arrest report said surveillance video showed Estrada entering the store on foot, walking through the produce area and approaching the victims as they turned into aisle four. Police said he then shot them multiple times. Investigators described the victims as married co-workers at the store.
Police said Estrada previously had a relationship with the female victim, which ended in 2021, and that they shared two children. The report said a roommate told investigators Estrada had recently discussed a child support case and feared he could be jailed for not paying.
Investigators said Estrada had a Sig Sauer 1911 .45-caliber handgun with one round in the chamber. Police also reported finding a CZ Scorpion Evo3 9mm semi-automatic carbine in his backpack, along with loaded magazines for both firearms.
Estrada was booked at the Clark County Detention Center. Police said he faces several charges, including open murder and aggravated stalking. His next court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
The store remained part of an active investigation after the shooting as police reviewed video, interviewed witnesses and processed the scene. Officials had not released the victims’ names pending family notification.
