Police said Devin Porter was found wounded Friday in a West 11th Street home.
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — The family of 14-year-old Devin Porter is asking for justice after the Michigan City High School freshman was shot Friday afternoon and later died at a hospital, police said.
The shooting happened about 4:30 p.m. in the 300 block of West 11th Street. Officers found Porter inside a home with a gunshot wound. Police said detectives are still working to determine what led to the shooting and are searching for witnesses and surveillance video.
Porter’s mother, India Harrington, said her son had recently asked to go play basketball, one of his favorite things to do. She said the family had been preparing to mark his birthday on May 24. Instead, she said, they are planning his funeral. “My son didn’t deserve this,” Harrington said.
Porter’s sister said she heard multiple gunshots before her brother came into her room and collapsed. She said younger siblings were nearby and took cover during the violence. The family said the trauma has left them scared to return home. Police have not released the name of any suspect, and no charges had been filed as of Monday.
Relatives described Porter as an honor roll student who was loved by teachers and focused on basketball. Harrington said he was not someone who caused trouble. She said the loss has shaken the family because the shooting happened in broad daylight and near children who were inside the home.
The case has added to concerns about violence involving young people in Michigan City. Police said another juvenile was shot in the foot the day before Porter was killed, about half a mile from the West 11th Street scene. Officials have not said the shootings are related.
Investigators are asking for information from people who were near West 11th Street on Friday afternoon or who may have video from homes, vehicles or nearby businesses. Police said the inquiry remains open, and more details will be released when they are available.
As of Monday, May 18, police had reported no arrests, and Porter’s family was waiting for answers in the killing of a boy they said was days from his 15th birthday.
