Police said the gunman fled after an argument near a taco stand.
LOS ANGELES — A 30-year-old man was shot and killed early Sunday near a South Los Angeles taco stand after an argument with someone in a vehicle, police said.
The man’s family identified him as Dashawn Coleman. Los Angeles police said the shooting was reported just before 2 a.m. Sunday near Holmes and Slauson avenues. No arrest had been announced, and investigators had not released a detailed suspect description.
Police said Coleman walked toward a vehicle before an argument began. The dispute escalated, and someone opened fire. First responders tried to save Coleman, but he died at the scene. The shooter fled in a vehicle, police said. Coleman’s brother, Brett Balley, said the family is still waiting for answers. “We don’t know nothing. All we know is we need justice,” Balley said.
Video from the area showed several bullet holes in a fence near the food stand. Jordan Guzman, who was working at the taco stand that night, said he heard yelling before the gunfire. Guzman said he then heard about seven gunshots and froze. Police have not said what started the argument, and they have not confirmed whether Coleman knew the person in the vehicle.
The shooting left relatives mourning Coleman and asking for the gunman to be found. Balley described his brother as caring and dependable. “He was a good person, a loving person,” Balley said. “He took care of everybody.” The area around Holmes and Slauson avenues is a busy South Los Angeles corridor where late-night food stands often draw workers, families and people passing through.
Detectives are still working to identify the shooter and the vehicle involved. Police said the suspect remained at large Sunday. A detailed description of the person who fired the shots was not immediately available. Investigators also had not said whether the case may be tied to any larger dispute.
The investigation remained open Monday as Coleman’s family pressed for justice. Police had not announced an arrest, and the motive behind the shooting remained unknown.
