The woman was found shot early Monday and later died at a hospital.
DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police are investigating after a woman was fatally shot early Monday at Rochelle Manor apartments near Wake Forest Highway, marking another serious shooting reported in the city since Friday.
Officers were called to the apartment complex around 2 a.m. and found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. Emergency workers took her to a hospital, where she later died. Authorities had not released her name by Monday afternoon.
Investigators spent the morning collecting evidence outside the apartment building. Evidence markers were placed near the scene, and officers photographed the area. A bullet hole was visible in a window, and investigators were seen entering and leaving an upstairs apartment as the inquiry continued.
The woman’s nephew told WRAL News that she was active in her community and said her death was “a huge loss.” Police had not said what led to the shooting, whether the woman knew the shooter or whether a suspect had been arrested. No other injuries were reported in the initial police account.
The case came after a violent stretch in Durham. Police also investigated a late Sunday shooting near Chapel Hill Road and Anderson Street, where a man inside a vehicle was critically injured. Other weekend shootings included cases on Century Oaks Drive, Hoover Road and Merrick Street. The Hoover Road shooting also injured a man with flying glass.
Police had not said Monday whether the shootings were related. Detectives were expected to continue reviewing physical evidence, witness statements and any available video from the apartment complex and nearby roads. The department had not announced a news conference or a timetable for releasing the victim’s identity.
The Rochelle Manor investigation remained active Monday afternoon, with police still working to determine who fired the shot, why it happened and whether charges will be filed.
