Police said two children fled the home before officers found a man with a knife.
HIGH POINT, N.C. — A husband and wife died Sunday night after a reported domestic assault at a Jamesford Drive home led to a police shooting, High Point officials said.
Police said officers were sent to 4524 Jamesford Drive at about 7:57 p.m. after two juveniles fled the home and told a neighbor an assault was happening inside. The call brought officers to a quiet residential area near Jamestown and opened two investigations, one into the woman’s death and one into the officers’ use of force.
Officers arrived at about 8:07 p.m. and knocked on the front door, but no one answered, police said. Two other officers went behind the home and reported signs of a violent assault. Officers at the front then forced their way inside and found an adult man covered in blood and holding a knife. High Point Police Chief Curtis Cheeks III said officers gave several commands, but the man kept moving toward them. Two officers fired, striking him. Officers then tried to give medical aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said officers searched the home and found an adult woman with life-threatening stab wounds. She died a short time later. Officials have not released the names of the man or woman, and they have not publicly detailed the relationship between the adults and the juveniles who left the home. No officers were physically injured. Cheeks said domestic calls can be unstable because officers often do not know what is happening inside a home before they enter.
The High Point Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the woman’s death as a homicide. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting, a standard step after police gunfire. Four officers involved in the response were placed on paid administrative leave under department protocol. Police said no additional suspects or witnesses were being sought and there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Neighbors described a sudden and heavy emergency response after what police said began as a domestic disturbance call. One neighbor told WXII he heard “four big shots in a row” while he was outside checking sprinklers. Another said the scene was unlike anything he had seen in the neighborhood. “I just hope that everybody, they get along,” the neighbor said.
Authorities said the investigations remained active Monday, with no names released and no further case details made public. The next major step is the SBI review of the police shooting.
